2016 Oscar Bingo game

My 2014 Oscar ballot and bingo game are done! Get set to enjoy Sunday's Academy Awards with friends. It doesn't matter if they watch movies or know who the actors are; anyone can play bingo and it's a good excuse for a party.

To use the ballot: print one for each guest and have them mark their predictions before the show starts. The person with the most correct guesses wins.

To use the bingo cards: 20 different game cards are included in the PDF. Print out the number of pages you need for your guests. Then fan out the sheets, close your eyes, wave your hands over them, and put your finger on a card. This one is meant to be yours. Your party guests can fight over the rest of the sheets, but they're not going to win. You are. As you all watch the telecast, the first person to mark off five squares in a line wins. It could be a horizontal, vertical, or diagonal line. (This year I removed the center "free" space to make you work a little harder.)

Movie theater gift cards, boxes of popcorn, candy, or little Oscar statuettes from a party store make good prizes.

Has anybody tried to play with friends long distance? You could each claim a page number to print out and then text or tweet each other when you get a bingo.

Like every year, a disclaimer: Maybe someone will get a bingo ten minutes into the telecast, or maybe your group won't have a winner at all because my psychic powers have failed this year. Best of luck!

Printable 2013 Oscar ballot and bingo game

2013 Oscar bingo
The Oscars are on February 24th. Whether you're hosting an Academy Awards party or planning to lounge on the couch in your PJs, it's fun to mark predictions on a ballot and try your luck at Oscar bingo.

Folks at your party will be counting the number of winners on stage, hoping the presenters will botch their lines, and cheering for the orchestra when it cuts off a speech. Movie theater gift cards, boxes of popcorn, or little Oscar statuettes from a party store make good prizes.

A bingo refresher: The first person to mark off five squares in a line wins. It could be a horizontal, vertical, or diagonal line, and the center square counts as a freebie.

There are 20 different game cards in the downloadable file. Save the PDF to your computer, open it in Adobe Reader, and print the number of pages you need at 100% size. (Then select the best sheet for yourself, of course.)

Like every year, my standard disclaimer applies. It might be possible to get a bingo ten minutes into the telecast, or maybe your group won't have a winner at all because my psychic powers have failed this time.
Good luck!

2014 Oscar bingo is coming soon

I've been getting gobs of email asking if I'll be making Oscar bingo cards again this year. You betcha. This will be the sixth year. I'm collecting info on the 2014 ceremony and will make up the cards a week or two before the show. There will be 20 different cards again, plus a matching ballot guests can fill out before the ceremony. (See the 2013 set here.) I'll post the free printable PDFs here on my blog.

To be notified when they're ready, add yourself to the Oscar bingo mailing list.

Update: Bingo is ready! Grab it here.

Fun facts: Over 1,000 people have signed up, and last year the bingo was featured on LIVE with Kelly & Michael on TV. So I'd better not screw it up.

The 2014 Oscars air March 2 at 7e/4p on ABC.

Can I ask for feedback from those who use them? I always design the sheets in black and white with no bleeds so they won't suck up an entire color ink cartridge. Do you like them in simple B/W, or would you prefer a fancier design in full color?

2012 Oscar bingo and ballot

Update: Looking for the 2013 Oscar bingo and ballot? Get it right here.

Hosting an Oscars party on Feb. 26? I've made up 20 different Oscar bingo cards you can print out, along with a matching ballot for guessing the Academy Award winners. And like every year, a big disclaimer for the game: it might be possible to win ten minutes into the telecast, or maybe there won't be any winners at all. Who knows? But based on personal experience, I can say it's really fun to play.

A bingo refresher: The first person to mark off five squares in a line wins. It could be a horizontal, vertical, or diagonal line, and the center square counts as a freebie.

To keep the PDF file sizes smaller, I've split the bingo set into two files of ten pages each. Save a file to your computer, open it in Adobe Reader, and print the number of pages you need at 100% size.

Download the first set of 10 cards.
Download the second set of 10 cards.
Download the ballot.

2010 Oscar party bingo

Update: Looking for the current edition? Sign up for free Oscar bingo right here.

Looking for extra entertainment during the Academy Awards on March 7? Back by popular demand, it's Oscar bingo. I made cards for our party last year, and it was really fun to play. You can download this year's bingo cards right here; it's a PDF with 12 different sheets. My big disclaimer: I have no idea if it will be possible to win at all, or perhaps someone could win ten minutes into the telecast. If it's a bust, please don't send me hate mail. To supplement your bingo game, you can download and print out the official ballot of nominees right here. It's always fun to see who guesses the most winners. And who guesses the least, so you can make fun of them.

A quick note to answer an FAQ: yup, I'll be making my annual Oscar bingo cards and a ballot again this year. Oscar bingo: 2011 edition

Update: Looking for 2013 Oscar bingo? Get it right here.

The Academy Awards draw nigh! Due to popular demand, I've updated Oscar Bingo for 2011. Download and print twelve different bingo cards. Give one to each of your party guests and race to see who can mark off five squares in a row on February 27. The annual disclaimer still applies: My psychic powers are weak, so I have no idea if it will be possible to win ten minutes into the telecast, or if there will be a winner at all. Good night, and good luck.

Host an Academy Awards party

Update: Looking for 2013 Oscar bingo? Grab it right here!

A few friends are coming over Sunday night to watch the Oscars, so I searched the trusty internet to find some party ideas. Evite suggested Oscar Bingo, which sounds hilarious, so I googled to find some examples. Then I pilfered a few things other people wrote from here and here and added some of my own squares to make game sheets. Since I went to the trouble, I figured I'd post the PDF here in case anybody else wants to play along during the telecast. (There are ten different sheets in the file.) Whether this game will even work is hard to say. But I think it will be fun to try. And I'll be making some Red Carpet Cocktails for us to sip. Any red drink or punch would be fun, but I'm planning to use this one (scaled down and possibly modified). Have fun!

Oscar bingo on TV

My annual Oscar bingo game made an appearance on the ABC talk show LIVE with Kelly & Michael this morning. Thanks for the mention, Carly, Kelly, and Michael!

A farewell to orange

Dear friends, the time has come. This blog is going into retirement. I'm packing it a suitcase stuffed with coral golf shirts, pumpkin plaid shorts, and tangerine tube socks and sending it off to hit golf balls in the sunny land of old blogs that had a good run.

If you know me in real life, you know I've been talking about finishing up this project for... oh, a couple of years now. Blogging has always been just a hobby for me, and I've avoided turning it into a full-time business with big collaborations, brand partnerships, and sponsored everythings. I never even bought a real domain name. I love graphic design, my bread and butter, and it has become too demanding to run this blog and get my client work done, which is always my first priority.

But I'm not disappearing. All the old posts will remain, plus we will stay internet friends. Here's where to find me:
How About Orange Facebook page (because I can't quit cold turkey, and will likely post more frequently there. Click "Get Notifications" under the Like tab.)

Thank you, everyone, for your friendship, comments, and company for the last 7 1/2 years. God bless you and keep you, and make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you.

Amen.

Goodbye.

Um, leaving now. Okay. Right. Done. The end.

Free font: Akura Popo

I've gotten a few requests for the name of the main typeface I used on yesterday's Oscar bingo cards. It's Brothers Regular, available from myfonts.com for $49. If you're looking for something free that has similar 19th century squared-off properties, try Akura Popo by Twicolabs Design. It's fair game for personal and commercial use. Akura Popo is more condensed and you'll have to do some manual kerning, but it might come in handy for your craft beer and banjo night invitations. Get it here.

P.S. I almost hit the publish button without noticing I'd made an unfortunate typographical error on "Popo." I have corrected it.

Time wasters: Oscars edition

Thank goodness it's Friday. If you need to kill a little time waiting for the weekend to get started, try these Oscar-related quizzes:

Guess the dress: Identify the actress wearing each gown.

What's Your Red-Carpet Style Personality: Find out which celebrity is a match for you. Apparently I am "Jennifer Lawrence aka The Sexpot Next Door." Yep, that's me.

Test your Oscar knowledge: The Chicago Tribune's annual trivia quiz.

Which 2014 Best Picture Nominee Are You: A crowd pleaser or an indie darling? I got Her. "At your best, you’re quirky and charming. At your worst, you’re a real downer to be around." Fabulous.

The Oscars: Can You Complete the Speech? Fill in the missing words.

And don't forget to download your printable ballot and bingo game for Sunday's telecast. Have a fun weekend!
